How a Frost Free Freezer Is Supposed to Work
A frost free freezer uses a small heater, a timer, and a thermostat to melt away ice build-up automatically every few hours. Older manual-defrost freezers rely on you to unplug and defrost them by hand. Frost free models were designed to remove that chore completely.
Inside the freezer wall, a defrost heater warms the evaporator coils on a schedule set by the defrost timer or control board. The melted frost drains away through a small tube, and the freezer goes right back to cooling.
Why Ice Still Builds Up Anyway
When a frost free freezer starts collecting a thick layer of ice, one part of that defrost cycle has usually failed. The most common causes are a burned-out defrost heater, a stuck defrost timer, or a clogged drain tube that lets melted frost refreeze instead of draining away.
A door seal that no longer closes tightly is another common cause. Warm, humid air keeps entering the freezer, and the defrost system can't keep up with the extra moisture.
What to Check Before Calling a Technician
- Make sure the door seal isn't cracked, dirty, or loose.
- Check that nothing inside is blocking the door from sealing fully.
- Note whether ice builds up in one spot (points to a drain clog) or across the whole back wall (points to a heater or timer issue).
If the ice keeps coming back within a week or two of clearing it, the defrost system itself needs attention. That's a job for a technician, since it involves testing electrical components inside the freezer wall.
